Why You Are Losing Distance After 40
It is not just age. The distance loss most golfers feel in their forties and fifties comes from a few specific things, and most of them are trainable.
You are hitting the same clubs into greens that used to take one less. The drives that used to run out to 260 are stopping at 235. Nothing feels broken, and your swing looks the same on video, but the ball is not going as far as it used to.
Almost every golfer over 40 runs into this. The usual explanation is that you are getting older, which is true and also completely useless, because it does not tell you what to do about it. It also implies that nothing can be done to change that.
Here is what is actually happening, and which parts of it you can change.
You Are Not Losing Strength. You Are Losing Speed.
This is the single most important thing to understand about aging and golf.
According to the research strength declines with age, but slowly. What declines much faster is power, which is the ability to produce force quickly. Power falls off at roughly twice the rate of maximal strength, and it starts earlier than most people expect.
Most 45 year old golfers have lost a little strength since they were 30. They have lost a lot more speed.
The reason is that the fast twitch muscle fibers, the ones responsible for rapid, explosive contraction, are the fibers most affected by aging and by disuse. If you have spent fifteen years not doing anything fast, your body has quietly stopped maintaining the machinery for it.
A golf swing is about a quarter of a second from transition to impact. That is a pure rate of force development event. There is no time to slowly build force. Whatever you can produce in that window is what the ball gets.
This is why the golfer who has been lifting weights three days a week for years can still be losing distance. For that golfer, strength was probably not the limiter. Heavy lifting does contribute to how fast you can produce force, but it is not the most direct way to train it, and a program with no fast work in it is leaving the piece that fades first untouched.
You Are Also Losing Range, and That Costs You Twice
The second thing that changes is how far your joints move.
The spine stiffens to protect. Hip rotation tightens up, especially in the lead hip. The mid-back loses extension and rotation, usually years before anyone notices, because desks and cars and phones all ask the body to fold forward and stay there. Also, if you have not exercised in ages, you most likely do not understand what a neutral zone of spine posture feels like.
Restricted range costs distance in two separate ways. The obvious one is that a shorter turn means less distance for the body to accelerate through. The less obvious one is that when a joint cannot deliver the motion the swing needs, the body takes it from somewhere else. Usually the lower back. That trade is where a lot of golfers’ pain begins, and pain makes you swing slower whether you intend to or not.
The Part Nobody Wants to Hear
Bodyweight and body composition change what you can do.
Power is measured relative to what you have to move. Fifteen extra pounds that are not contributing force still have to be accelerated, decelerated and controlled by the same body.
Be careful with how you read that, though. Mass is not the enemy in golf. Bigger, stronger players tend to swing faster, and adding muscle is usually a good thing. What works against you is weight that produces nothing. Adding muscle and losing fat improves the ratio of what you can produce to what you have to move, and that ratio is what shows up on the force plate.
What Actually Brings Distance Back
The good news is that the aging research is encouraging on this. Power responds to training at every age that has been studied, including in adults well into their seventies and eighties. Some of what age takes is not coming back. Most of what disuse took is. That is the key, and the research forgets to mention that many older adults who have not exercised in years, or at all, can still put muscle on and get stronger and faster. We have seen this over and over.
Train something fast, most days you train
Medicine ball throws, jumps, sprints, swings with a light stick. The specific tool matters less than the intent. Something in your week has to be done with maximum speed, because that is the only stimulus that keeps rate of force development alive. However, remember you should be able to move through the range of motion you are putting your body into at high velocities, and if you cannot control or own those positions, pain or injury are imminent.
Keep the strength base, but stop making it the whole plan
Strength is the ceiling that power lives under, so it still matters. It just is not the thing that is failing for most 45 year olds. Enough strength, plus real speed work, beats a lot of strength with no speed work.
Get your range back before you chase speed with it
Adding speed to a body that cannot get into position is how people get hurt. Open up the spine, hips and shoulders first, then ask them to move fast.
Find out which one is actually your problem
Everything above is generic advice, and generic advice is why most golfers spin their wheels. Two golfers can both be losing 25 yards for completely opposite reasons. One has plenty of strength and no speed. The other cannot turn far enough to use the speed they already have. Same symptom, and the correct training for one is close to a waste of time for the other.
Think about how this works with blood pressure.
You go in for a checkup, the number comes back high, and you leave with a prescription. The medication brings the number down. What nobody asked is why it was high in the first place. Was it stress, sleep, diet, bodyweight, activity level, something genetic? The number improves and the reason it was there never gets addressed.
Low clubhead speed gets handled exactly the same way. The number is low, so the prescription is speed training. Sometimes that is the right call, because speed really was the missing piece. Plenty of the time it is not, because the speed was low for a reason that speed training does not touch. You can train speed all winter, and if the actual limiter was a hip that will not rotate or a strength base that cannot support more output, you are managing a number instead of fixing a problem.
The right question after a low number is not what do I take for this. It is why is it low.
Same for distance. The symptom is the same for everybody. The cause almost never is.
How We Find Out Which One You Are
This is the reason we test before we train anything.
We measure power on force plates, so we can see not just how high you jump but how fast you produced the force to do it. We measure strength separately, because knowing whether the force exists is a different question from whether you can deliver it quickly. We go joint by joint through mobility. And we check left against right, because a one direction sport played for thirty years leaves marks.
Then the answer stops being a guess.

Distance loss after 40 is real, but the story people tell about it is wrong. You are usually not weaker. You are slower, stiffer, and carrying more than you were, and all three of those respond to the right training.
