The Functional Profile: Golf Stats for Your Body

We test every physical quality that matters for golf and compare it to the field. Just like strokes gained, but for the athlete swinging the club.

Ask any serious golfer about their game and you’ll get numbers. Handicap. Driving distance. Greens in regulation. Strokes gained putting. Modern golf runs on stats, and for good reason: the numbers tell you exactly where your game stands against the field, and exactly where the strokes are leaking.

Now ask that same golfer about the body making all those swings. How much shoulder mobility do you actually have? How does your lower body power compare to other players? Which side of your body is more dominant and how does it compare to the other side?

Silence, or “Well, it feels like…” And that’s the gap we built the Functional Profile to close. No guessing or feels, but objective useable data.

What Golf Stats Taught Us

The strokes gained revolution changed golf in many different ways. It measured everything, and thus created field comparisons. Suddenly you didn’t just know you shot 82. You knew your approach play was costing you three strokes a round while your putting was actually fine. You knew how to adjust and created a better suited practice routine.

Your body works exactly the same way. It has strengths, weaknesses, and leaks. But most golfers train it blind: random workouts, generic stretches, no baseline, no comparison. That’s like practicing without tracking data.

You can’t fix a leak you’ve never measured.

The Functional Profile

When someone starts working with us, we test many different regions and “motor qualities” before we train anything. Every physical quality that relates to the sport of golf gets measured and compared to the field, then mapped onto a chart every golfer already knows how to read or has seen…the radar chart.

Golfers use radar charts like this to see their game at a glance. Five spokes, one shape, and the weakness jumps right out.

Now in regards to physical capabilities, we use what we call the Functional Profile which takes a birds eye view at the following…

  • Power. How much explosive output can you produce? This is where clubhead speed is born.
  • Strength. The engine behind the power. How much force can you produce both total and relative to your own bodyweight?
  • Symmetry. Does your left side match your right? Imbalances leak energy and invite injury.
  • Stability. Can you control the positions your swing puts you in? Balance, motor control, and the small stabilizers that hold up over 18 holes.
  • Mobility. Can your joints get into the positions to absorb and adapt to stress? Neck, spine, hips, shoulders, all the way down to the knees and wrists.

Reading the Chart

Look at the profile above. This player’s power is excellent, well above the field. Strength is solid. But mobility sits at 47%, below average. That gap is the story.

So what does high power on top of limited mobility mean? That is the golden question, and it totally depends on the player.

Do they want more speed? Are they trying to get into certain positions in their swing that they have difficulty with? How does their body feel pre and post round? These are all questions we would follow up with to then decide if increasing mobility is a useful approach for the player or not.

Then We Go Deeper

Here’s where it works just like golf stats. Strokes gained doesn’t stop at “your approach play is below the field average,” it can become even more precise. You drill down: how do you hit it from 75-100, from 125-150, or from 175-200 out?

We do the same thing with the body. Mobility is the weak spoke? Then mobility gets its own chart.

Now the picture is sharper. The neck, shoulders, and wrists are fine. The spine barely rotates, and the knees and hips are close behind. Those areas are where the backswing dies, and now they become the priority. No guessing, no generic stretching routine. A specific limitation with a specific plan.

Why Compare to the Field?

A number on its own means nothing. Rotating your trunk 38 degrees is just a number until you know a golf swing wants 45 or more, and until you know where that puts you against other players. Context turns measurements into decisions. That’s the entire lesson of golf analytics, and it applies just as much to the athlete as it does to the scorecard.

Your Body Has a Stat Line

Every serious golfer we work with over time eventually has a Functional Profile.

This profile is like a map which tells us where we are and where we want to be. The journey between the two is the work.
