Symmetry: Does Your Left Look Like Your Right?

Golf is a one direction sport played by a two sided body. Here is what we do about that.

Golf is played in one direction. You swing the same way, thousands of times a year, and your body responds and adapts to exactly what you ask of it.

That adaptation is not evenly distributed. One hip rotates more than the other. One shoulder gives up range. One side learns to produce more force because it has been asked to. This is totally normal and expected.

However, most golfers have no idea how asymmetrical they are until they see it on a chart.

Symmetry Is Not the Same as Identical

Let us handle the obvious objection first. No, we are not trying to make every golfer perfectly “even”. Some asymmetry in a rotational athlete is normal and, in certain cases, useful.

This is a hot topic and it is genuinely up for debate in our field. There are people who insist all asymmetry must be corrected and people who insist none of it matters. Both positions are too simple and reductionistic, which are antithetical to our CARS framework.

The question is not whether you are asymmetrical. It is whether your asymmetry is costing you something major. It is a trade off.

We use hard data from multiple fields to address this, and we look at where the difference sits and how large it is before deciding whether it needs attention at all.

What We Compare

Symmetry is the one spoke that runs across everything else. Any test performed one side at a time gets compared side to side, and the results roll up into four categories.

Strength

Can one leg produce meaningfully more force than the other? Does one hip move drastically different than the other and why? Strength differences change how you load into the ground and how you resist the forces coming back up.

Power

Force differences are one thing. Explosive output differences are another, and they often do not match. A golfer can be even in strength and quite uneven in how quickly each side expresses it.

Stability

Balance and control, one side at a time. This is frequently where the largest gaps appear, and where golfers are most surprised. Standing on one leg with your eyes closed is honest in a way that few tests are. From there we can move on to more challenging stability requirements.

Mobility

Range differences between the lead and trail side. In golfers this is the most predictable asymmetry of the group, because the swing itself creates it. The question is how far it has gone. It is very common to see much less hip internal rotation on the lead side, yes the lead side.

Reading the Chart

On this chart, higher means more matched. A low score does not mean weak, it means uneven or a big difference between sides.

Two things make an asymmetry worth acting on. Size, and location. A small difference in grip strength is not the same as a large difference in hip rotation or single leg control. The first one is noise. The second changes how the swing has to be organized.

The other thing we watch is whether the asymmetry lines up with a history. If the low side is also the side of an old injury or a recurring complaint, the chart just confirmed something worth taking seriously.

Why imbalances matter. They leak energy, because force has to be managed rather than delivered. And they concentrate load, because whatever the weaker side cannot handle gets absorbed somewhere else. Over a season, that is how nagging problems start. What is often neglected by those who say asymmetry is normal in golfers, and I agree it is, is that we have seen countless studies showing side to side differences of more than 10 percent correlate with higher risk of pain and injury. Again, this does not mean that if you can rotate your trunk 80 degrees to the right and 20 degrees to the left you will get low back pain, but rather that there is an increased risk of something happening, and that something is unknown at times.

Five spokes. Power, strength, stability, mobility and symmetry, each with their own chart, each measured and compared to the field.

Put them together and you have a map of the athlete swinging the club: what you produce, what you produce it with, whether you can control it, whether you can get into position, and whether both sides of you are pulling their weight.

None of it is guesswork. It is the same logic golfers already trust with their strokes gained, applied to the body that has to hit the shots.

One Last Thing

Everything in this series has been about the physical. Five spokes, a lot of tests, and a map of what your body can and cannot do.

But the physical is only one side of a human. Sleep, nutrition, stress, mindset, blood work, and everything happening in life outside of golf all feed into what shows up on these charts. None of it stays in its own lane.

That is the CARS framework, and it is where this whole series started. The Functional Profile tells us what your body is doing. It does not tell us the whole story, and we would never pretend it does.
