The CARS Framework: The System Behind Firefly Performance

The four pillars of athlete performance:

Most performance programs are built around isolated variables: a strength number, a swing metric, a sleep score, a body-fat percentage, a single blood marker. Each one gets optimized on its own, often by different specialists who rarely communicate with each other.

That works until it doesn’t. An athlete is not a stack of separate parts that happen to share a body. Your nerves, hormones, gut, joints, brain, muscles, and mitochondria are constantly talking to each other. A bad week of sleep doesn’t just give you a “bad recovery score.” Fast food doesn’t just “replenish your calories.” High intensity interval training doesn’t just “shed fat.” Each of these affects everyone a little differently, but they all change your ability to build and recover, slow your reaction time, and quietly change how well your body absorbs the next day or even week of training. A stressful stretch at home doesn’t stay at home. It shows up in your recovery, and in the way a joint feels three weeks later.

This is the idea behind what I call a systems-based approach, built on a simple framework I call CARS (Complex, Adaptable, Responsive, System). It isn’t a philosophy for its own sake. It’s a practical description of how the body actually behaves, and it changes what gets watched, what gets adjusted, and when.

Your best performance comes from everything working together, not from any one piece by itself.

What “Systems-Based” Actually Means

Four ideas drive every decision in the program, from how an evaluation is structured to how a Tuesday check-in gets handled.

Complex: No single number tells the story.

Performance and health come from a dozen or more parts working together (your nerves, muscles and joints, heart and lungs, hormones, immune system, gut, nutrition, sleep, mindset, relationships, environment, and genetics), not from any one of them alone. This is why an initial evaluation looks at mobility, stability, strength, and power together rather than chasing one number. It’s also why ongoing monitoring reviews sleep, psychological wellbeing, nutrient intake, hydration, and fatigue, not just physical output, and why testing is tracked across a full off-season rather than a single session.

Adaptable: The body adapts to everything, not just training.

Training is one input among many. Sleep, travel, nutrition, and psychological state are also inputs, and the body reorganizes around the sum of all of them, not just the workout. Adaptation is necessary for survival, but it isn’t automatically good for performance: the body adapts to whatever it’s given, good or bad. This is why programming isn’t fixed. It shifts during tournament weeks, adjusts for travel, and changes based on how an athlete is actually feeling that week, not just what’s written on the calendar.

Responsive: Stressors compound, and they don’t disappear on their own.

A hard week doesn’t cancel itself out with one easy day. Stress hormones, immune responses, gut bacteria, and mitochondria keep responding long after whatever caused them, and stress from one part of life (a bad night of sleep, a tense week at home) shows up somewhere else (a nagging strain, a flat training session). How you say you’re feeling matters just as much as any number. Genetics and epigenetics set each athlete’s buffer zone, but everyone has a limit. This is why wearable data and how you say you’re feeling are reviewed together, weekly. Not to chase a score, but to catch a pattern before it becomes an injury, a slump, or that nagging issue you had years ago.

System: The goal is resilience, not a highlight reel of PRs.

Optimizing one piece while ignoring the rest isn’t optimization. It’s just moving the constraint somewhere else. Blood work, nutrition, injury care, and training are handled as one connected picture, rather than as separate agents solving separate problems without talking to each other.

What This Looks Like Day to Day

The framework only matters if it changes what actually happens week to week. In practice, a systems-based approach means:

  • The initial evaluation covers the whole physical profile (mobility, stability, strength, and power together), not just what’s easy to measure.
  • Programming adjusts in real time for travel, fatigue, tournament load, or how a joint feels that day, rather than following a fixed template regardless of context.
  • Wearable data is one input, not the only one. Heart rate, blood markers, HRV (a measure of recovery), sleep hours, and calories burned and eaten all take time to add up before they paint the full picture, and how an athlete says they’re feeling still carries equal or greater weight.
  • Injury care is folded into training, not outsourced to a separate rehab track that ignores the rest of the program. An injury adjusts the plan. It doesn’t pause it.
  • Nutrition and blood work are reviewed alongside training and recovery data, not as a disconnected checklist handled by someone who never sees the rest of the picture.
  • Everything stays confidential and centralized with one point of contact, so nothing gets lost in translation between specialists.

The whole is greater than the sum of its parts.

None of this is about doing more. It’s about making sure what gets done actually accounts for how the body works, treating it as one interconnected system, not a set of parts to be separately fixed.
